COFFEE IN CONGO
Historically, the DRC has been primarily a Robusta producer. However, in recent years, Arabica cultivated in the highland regions has garnered attention from specialty coffee roasters. With development commitments from prominent roasters and quality improvement assistance from traders such as Schluter (now Olam Specialty Coffee Europe), the DRC has established a presence within the specialty coffee market. Over the past five years, washing stations have been established throughout the growing regions, and the country has hosted cupping events.
While commercial green coffee production did not start significantly until the late nineteenth century, Robusta was first discovered in DRC and has long grown throughout the region. So prevalent was its presence that, a century ago, Robusta was sometimes referred to as “Congo coffee,” irrespective of its origin.
Around 1895, the esteemed botanist Professor Lament toured the country. He assessed the land as exceptionally well-suited for coffee cultivation, proclaiming its potential to become a “second Brazil.” Consequently, Arabica plantings increased substantially. By 1905, cultivation encompassed half a million coffee plants, with exports reaching 41 tons.
