ABOUT THE PRODUCERS
Virunga National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site and Africa's oldest national park, is a critical refuge for endangered species like mountain gorillas. This vital ecosystem lies within North Kivu, a region that has emerged as a source of exceptional Arabica coffee over the past decade. Despite persistent conflict in the Democratic Republic of Congo, where North Kivu is located, specialty coffee is playing a key role in driving economic and environmental regeneration. Initiatives led by the Virunga Alliance, including hydroelectric power and agricultural programs supporting local coffee farmers, are essential for both conservation and community development. For citizens facing political struggles and civil unrest, coffee is a crucial cash crop, balancing food security with much-needed income.
With an average farm size of just 0.37 hectares, the cooperative represents over 4,500 smallholder farmers in the villages bordering Virunga National Park.
